The waveの抽選のために、１週間ほど滞在したカナブ。
いよいよ、ユタ州に突入です！

歴史 「リトルハリウッド」と呼ばれていて、西部劇のロケ地などで使われてきた。（「猿の惑星」もらしい！！知らなかった！）
モルモン教とゆかりのある地で、モルモン教徒の家族がこの地域に移住して町ができたらしい。
観光名所 バーミリオンクリフス国定公園、ブライスキャニオン国立公園、グランドキャニオン、ザイオン国立公園、ホースシューベンド、モニュメントバレー、パウエル湖など、３,4時間で行ける観光地がいっぱい！！
The waveってご存知ですか？
2003年にカメラマンによって発見され、一躍有名になった場所なんです。
（「the wave, arizona」と調べていただいたら、すぐ出てきます。）
このザ・ウェーブは自然保護区内にあり、登山道がないので、一日20人だけ、抽選で入場の許可がもらえます。
抽選で当たった人だけにもらえる地図があり、それを頼りに行くんですが、
発見から20年も経てば、Google mapに載ってますね。笑
（2017年の時点では、まだGoogle mapに出てこなかったです。）

今はもうThe waveの抽選は全てネットなんですが、私が行った2017年はカナブにあるビジターセンターで、ビンゴのガラガラで伝わるかな…

これで当たったチームは、The waveまでの地図と許可証がもらえます。
The waveまではその地図がないと行けないんです。舗装されていない道を進むので、どこまでGPSが働くかわかりません。行った人が少なすぎて情報がない！３時間のトレッキングと言われているけど、道なき道を進むのでわからないですよね。
そんな貴重な場所がThe waveです。
で、私たちはこの地図が欲しいために、何回か抽選にチャレンジしたのですが、結局、私たちは当たらず…
しかし、ここで奇跡の出会いが!!!
（やっぱ、運持ってる！）
抽選会場では、エントリーした代表者の名前が順番に呼ばれて、ビンゴが始まるのですが、その時に私たち以外にも日本人っぽい苗字が呼ばれたのを私は覚えていて、抽選が終わった瞬間、すぐ話しかけに行きました。
「日本人の方ですか？」と奥さんに声をかけたら、
👩「？…!Papa!」
👨「Um?」
Maiko「あ、日本人の方ですか？」
👨「ああ、そうだよ！君たちも？当たった？」
Maiko「当たらなかったんですよ〜。私たち３回目（多分）のチャレンジやったのに〜」
👨「はは笑 そっかそっか！日本から来たの？」
Maiko「はい！みんなで横断してて！」
👨「いいねえ、楽しいでしょ！妻はね、韓国人なの。だから日本語は少ししか話せなくて。」
Maiko「あ！そうだったんですか！お名前が日本人ぽかったので、つい話しかけてしまいました笑」
と会話してたら、仲間たちが帰ろうとしてたので、「じゃあ！」とさよならして、残念モードの中、今日どうする？とトボトボ、駐車場に戻ろうとしたとき！！！
👨「ねえ！今日のスケジュールは？」
Maiko「何もないです〜」
👨「じゃあ、ウェーブとは違うほうのトレッキングの空きがあるから、一緒に来なさい！」
みんな「！？！？！？！？」
Maiko「違うほうとか、あるんですか！？」
なんと、The waveが有名になりすぎて、他にも申し込んだら地図がもらえる登山口があったんです！！！
ぜひ！しかも、お二人と一緒なんて心強すぎる！！！！！
ということで、ご一緒に登山することに☺️
奇跡ってありますね〜
いろんな人に話しかけるもんですね〜
これが私の取り柄です！
次回、カナブで出会ったご夫婦と奇跡の登山の巻です〜
で、もう一つ。このカナブという町で奇跡の出会いがありました。
それは。。。
ヤギです。
私、まいこ、人生で初めてヤギを拾いました。
みんなでぶらぶら街を歩いてると、道路挟んで、むこーーーーうほうから、白いモフモフの生き物がこっちにまっすぐ走ってきたんです。
「いぬやああああ😍」
って真っ先に走り出した、私。
聞こえてきた鳴き声で足を止めます。
「メエエエエエ〜！」
「え…
ヤギやん。。。みんな！これヤギやで！」
どうしていいものか
首輪みたいな、紐見たいなものが繋がってたから飼われているんだなと推測。
バックパッカーが野生の犬を連れて旅するのに、少し憧れもあったから、
「このまま、ロサンゼルスまでおともする？」
とか、日本連れて帰る？免疫の検査大変かな。。。と色々考えて、少しだけ一緒にお散歩〜
結局、
「置いていこう」
となったのはいいけれど、
どうするよ、この子。。。
誰か大人に相談したかったけど、人が歩いていないんです！この街、カナブ！！
しかも、交番みたいなものも見当たらず。
でも、教会はたくさん。（さすが、モルモン教。）
「コンコン」と近くにあった教会の扉をノックして、出てきたおじいちゃんに、
“We bumped into the baby…”
これだけでわかってくれた、おじいちゃん！ありがとう！
「どっかから逃げてきたんかもね！ありがとうありがとう！探しとくよ！」
と預かってくれました！
みんなでホッとして、宿に戻ってる時に仲間の誰かが、
「あのおじいさん、食べへんよな？」と。
その考え、なかったーーーー！笑
今日は思い出深いカナブの街のお話でした。
ご夫婦の他にもこの街で一緒に抽選に外れた日本人グループと仲良くなって、一緒にBBQしたりと楽しい思い出がいっぱいの街でした。

The wave lottery brought us to Kanab for about a week. We’re finally entering the state of Utah!

History: Kanab is known as “Little Hollywood” and has been used as a filming location for Western movies. It’s also associated with the Mormon religion, as the town was established by Mormon families who moved to the area.
Tourist Attractions: There are many tourist destinations that can be reached within 3-4 hours, such as Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, Bryce Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Horseshoe Bend, Monument Valley, and Lake Powell.

Have you heard of “The Wave”? It’s a location that gained fame after being discovered by a photographer in 2003. (If you search for “the wave, arizona” it will come up right away.) The Wave is located in a protected area, and there is no designated trail. Only 20 people are allowed to enter each day through a lottery system. If you win the lottery, you receive a special map that is required to navigate to The Wave.
Interestingly, after 20 years, The Wave is now on Google Maps. (It wasn’t on Google Maps as of 2017.) Here it is.
Nowadays, The Wave lottery is conducted online, but when I visited in 2017, it was held at the visitors center in Kanab, using a bingo machine.
You can get a map and permit if you win the lottery. The map is essential because there is no paved road, and GPS coverage is uncertain. The hike is said to take about 3 hours, but since there is no trail, it’s hard to predict.
The Wave is a truly remarkable place.
Now, even though we tried the lottery a few times, we didn’t win…
However, a miracle happened!
At the lottery event, I remembered hearing a name that sounded Japanese, other than ours. As soon as the lottery was over, I went up and spoke to the couple.
Me: “Are you Japanese?”
Husband: “Yes, we are! Did you also enter the lottery? Did you win?”
Me: “No, we didn’t win… This was our third (maybe) attempt. We’re traveling together from Japan.”
Husband: “Ah, I see! That’s too bad! My wife is from Korea, so she can only speak a little Japanese.”
Me: “Oh, I see! Your name sounded Japanese, so I couldn’t help but start a conversation.”
We chatted for a while, but our group was about to leave. As we were feeling disappointed, I asked, “What should we do today?” and we started walking back to the parking lot when…
Husband: “Hey, what’s your schedule for today?”
Me: “We don’t have anything planned.”
Husband: “Well, there is an available spot for a different hike, not The Wave. Why don’t you come with us?”
Everyone: “?!?!?”
Me: “There’s another hike?!”
Surprisingly, because The Wave became so popular, another location with a hike and a map became available for those who didn’t win the lottery! We were so excited, especially since we were with this couple!
So, we decided to hike together. It’s amazing how miracles can happen, and how talking to different people can lead to incredible opportunities.
Next time, I’ll share the story of the miraculous hike we had with this couple we met in Kanab.
Now, there was another miraculous encounter in the town of Kanab…
It’s a goat.
For the first time in my life, I picked up a goat. While we were wandering around the town, a fluffy white creature came running towards us from the other side of the road. “It’s a dog!” I exclaimed, and immediately ran towards it. But then, I heard a bleating sound, and I stopped in my tracks.
“Baa Baa”
“Huh… it’s a goat. Everyone, it’s a goat!”
I tried to figure out what to do. There was some kind of collar or leash on it, so it was probably someone’s pet. Since I had always been intrigued by backpackers traveling with their dogs, the thought of bringing this goat with us all the way to Los Angeles or even back to Japan crossed my mind. But then I realized the difficulties of immunization tests and regulations.
In the end, we decided to leave it behind. But what should we do about this little goat? We wanted to consult an adult, but there were no people around in the town of Kanab! Although there were plenty of churches (as expected in a Mormon town), we couldn’t find a police station-like building. However, we knocked on the door of a nearby church and an old man came out.
“We bumped into the baby…”
With just those words, he understood and said, “Maybe it ran away from somewhere! Thank you, thank you. I’ll look into it.”
He kindly agreed to take care of the goat.
Feeling relieved, we walked back to our accommodation. That’s when one of our friends said, “I wonder if that old man will eat it.” We hadn’t even considered that possibility!
Today, I shared a memorable story about the town of Kanab. We became friends with a Japanese group who also didn’t win the lottery and had a great time having a BBQ together. Kanab was a charming town with lots of wonderful memories.
